1
LA Seniores ergo, qui in vobis sunt, obsecro, consenior et testis Christi passionum: qui et ejus, quæ in futuro revelanda est, gloriæ communicator:
EN The ancients therefore that are among you, I beseech who am myself also an ancient and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as also a partaker of that glory which is to be revealed in time to come:
^1
2
EN Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking care of it, not by constraint but willingly, according to God: not for filthy lucre’s sake but voluntarily:
^2
3
EN Neither as lording it over the clergy but being made a pattern of the flock from the heart.
^3
4
LA Et cum apparuerit princeps pastorum, percipietis immarcescibilem gloriæ coronam.
EN And when the prince of pastors shall appear, you shall receive a never fading crown of glory.
^4
5
LA Similiter adolescentes subditi estote senioribus. Omnes autem invicem humilitatem insinuate, quia Deus superbis resistit, humilibus autem dat gratiam.
EN In like manner, you young men, be subject to the ancients. And do you all insinuate humility one to another: for God resists the proud, but to the humble he gives grace.
^5
6
LA Humiliamini igitur sub potenti manu Dei, ut vos exaltet in tempore visitationis:
EN Be humbled therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in the time of visitation:
^6
7
EN Casting all your care upon him, for he has care of you.
^7
8
LA Sobrii estote, et vigilate: quia adversarius vester diabolus tamquam leo rugiens circuit, quærens quem devoret:
EN Be sober and watch: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goes about seeking whom he may devour.
^8
9
LA cui resistite fortes in fide: scientes eamdem passionem ei quæ in mundo est vestræ fraternitati fieri.
EN Whom resist, strong in faith: knowing that the same affliction befalls your brethren who are in the world.
^9
10
LA Deus autem omnis gratiæ, qui vocavit nos in æternam suam gloriam in Christo Jesu, modicum passos ipse perficiet, confirmabit, solidabitque.
EN But the God of all grace, who has called us unto his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little, will himself perfect you and confirm you and establish you.
^10
11
LA Ipsi gloria, et imperium in sæcula sæculorum. Amen.
EN To him be glory and empire, for ever and ever. Amen.
^11
12
LA Per Silvanum fidelem fratrem vobis, ut arbitror, breviter scripsi: obsecrans et contestans, hanc esse veram gratiam Dei, in qua statis.
EN By Sylvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I think, I have written briefly: beseeching and testifying that this is the true grace of God, wherein you stand.
^12
13
EN The church that is in Babylon, elected together with you, salutes you. And so does my son, Mark.
^13
14
LA Salutate invicem in osculo sancto. Gratia vobis omnibus qui estis in Christo Jesu. Amen.
EN Salute one another with a holy kiss. Grace be to all you who are in Christ Jesus. Amen.
