Book: Ephesians · ← Ephesians 4 · Ephesians 6 →
1
LA Estote ergo imitatores Dei, sicut filii carissimi,
EN Be therefore followers of God, as most dear children:
^1
2
LA et ambulate in dilectione, sicut et Christus dilexit nos, et tradidit semetipsum pro nobis, oblationem et hostiam Deo in odorem suavitatis.
EN And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and has delivered himself for us, an oblation and a sacrifice to God for an odour of sweetness.
^2
3
EN But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not so much as be named among you, as becomes saints:
^3
4
EN Or obscenity or foolish talking or scurrility, which is to no purpose: but rather giving of thanks.
^4
5
EN For know you this and understand: That no fornicator or unclean or covetous person (which is a serving of idols) has inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
^5
6
LA Nemo vos seducat inanibus verbis: propter hæc enim venit ira Dei in filios diffidentiæ.
EN Let no man deceive you with vain words. For because of these things comes the anger of God upon the children of unbelief.
^6
7
LA Nolite ergo effici participes eorum.
EN Be not therefore partakers with them.
^7
8
EN For you were heretofore darkness, but now light in the Lord. Walk then as children of the light.
^8
9
EN For the fruit of the light is in all goodness and justice and truth:
^9
10
LA probantes quid sit beneplacitum Deo:
EN Proving what is well pleasing to God.
^10
11
EN And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness: but rather reprove them.
^11
12
EN For the things that are done by them in secret, it is a shame even to speak of.
^12
13
EN But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for all that is made manifest is light.
^13
14
EN Wherefore he says: Rise, you that sleep, and arise from the dead: and Christ shall enlighten you.
^14
15
EN See therefore, brethren, how you walk circumspectly: not as unwise,
^15
16
EN but as wise: redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
^16
17
EN Wherefore, become not unwise: but understanding what is the will of God.
^17
18
LA Et nolite inebriari vino, in quo est luxuria, sed implemini Spiritu Sancto,
EN And be not drunk with wine, wherein is luxury: but be filled with the Holy Spirit,
^18
19
LA loquentes vobismetipsis in psalmis, et hymnis, et canticis spiritualibus, cantantes et psallentes in cordibus vestris Domino,
EN speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual canticles, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord:
^19
20
LA gratias agentes semper pro omnibus in nomine Domini nostri Jesu Christi Deo et Patri,
EN Giving thanks always for all things, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God and the Father:
^20
21
LA subjecti invicem in timore Christi.
EN Being subject one to another, in the fear of Christ.
^21
22
LA Mulieres viris suis subditæ sint, sicut Domino:
EN Let women be subject to their husbands, as to the Lord:
^22
23
EN Because the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church. He is the saviour of his body.
^23
24
EN Therefore as the church is subject to Christ: so also let the wives be to their husbands in all things.
^24
25
EN Husbands, love your wives, as Christ also loved the church and delivered himself up for it:
^25
26
LA ut illam sanctificaret, mundans lavacro aquæ in verbo vitæ,
EN That he might sanctify it, cleansing it by the laver of water in the word of life:
^26
27
EN That he might present it to himself, a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
^27
28
EN So also ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loves his wife loves himself.
^28
29
EN For no man ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, as also Christ does the church:
^29
30
EN Because we are members of him, body, of his flesh and of his bones.
^30
31
EN For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother: and shall cleave to his wife. And they shall be two in one flesh.
^31
32
EN This is a great sacrament: but I speak in Christ and in the church.
^32
33
LA Verumtamen et vos singuli, unusquisque uxorem suam sicut seipsum diligat: uxor autem timeat virum suum.
EN Nevertheless, let every one of you in particular love for his wife as himself: And let the wife fear her husband.
^33
[!note]- As the church is subject to Christ…
The church then, according to St. Paul, is ever obedient to Christ, and can never fall from him, but remain faithful to him, unspotted and unchanged to the end of the world.
