1
LA Tædet animam meam vitæ meæ; dimittam adversum me eloquium meum: loquar in amaritudine animæ meæ.
EN My soul is weary of my life, I will let go my speech against myself, I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.
^1
2
LA Dicam Deo: Noli me condemnare; indica mihi cur me ita judices.
EN I will say to God: Do not condemn me: tell me why you judge me so?
^2
3
LA Numquid bonum tibi videtur, si calumnieris me, et opprimas me opus manuum tuarum, et consilium impiorum adjuves?
EN Does it seem good to you that you should calumniate me, and oppress me, the work of your own hands, and help the counsel of the wicked?
^3
4
EN Have you eyes of flesh: or, shall you see as man sees?
^4
5
LA Numquid sicut dies hominis dies tui, et anni tui sicut humana sunt tempora,
EN Are your days as the days of man, and are your years as the times of men:
^5
6
EN That you should inquire after my iniquity, and search after my sin?
^6
7
EN And should know that I have done no wicked thing, whereas there is no man that can deliver out of your hand?
^7
8
LA Manus tuæ fecerunt me, et plasmaverunt me totum in circuitu: et sic repente præcipitas me?
EN Your hands have made me, and fashioned me wholly round about, and do you thus cast me down headlong on a sudden?
^8
9
LA Memento, quæso, quod sicut lutum feceris me, et in pulverem reduces me.
EN Remember, I beseech you, that you have made me as the clay, and you will bring me into dust.
^9
10
LA Nonne sicut lac mulsisti me, et sicut caseum me coagulasti?
EN Have you not milked me as milk, and curdled me like cheese?
^10
11
LA Pelle et carnibus vestisti me; ossibus et nervis compegisti me.
EN You have clothed me with skin and flesh: you have put me together with bones and sinews:
^11
12
EN You have granted me life and mercy, and your visitation has preserved my spirit.
^12
13
LA Licet hæc celes in corde tuo, tamen scio quia universorum memineris.
EN Although you conceal these things in your heart, yet I know that you remember all things.
^13
14
EN If I have sinned, and you have spared me for an hour: why do you not suffer me to be clean from my iniquity?
^14
15
EN And if I be wicked, woe unto me: and if just, I shall not lift up my head, being filled with affliction and misery.
^15
16
LA Et propter superbiam quasi leænam capies me, reversusque mirabiliter me crucias.
EN And for pride you will take me as a lioness, and returning, you torment me wonderfully.
^16
17
LA Instauras testes tuos contra me, et multiplicas iram tuam adversum me, et pœnæ militant in me.
EN You renew your witnesses against me, and multiply your wrath upon me, and pains war against me.
^17
18
LA Quare de vulva eduxisti me? qui utinam consumptus essem, ne oculus me videret.
EN Why did you bring me forth out of the womb? O that I had been consumed, that eye might not see me!
^18
19
EN I should have been as if I had not been, carried from the womb to the grave.
^19
20
LA Numquid non paucitas dierum meorum finietur brevi? dimitte ergo me, ut plangam paululum dolorem meum,
EN Shall not the fewness of my days be ended shortly? Suffer me, therefore, that I may lament my sorrow a little:
^20
21
EN Before I go and return no more, to a land that is dark and covered with the mist of death:
^21
22
EN A land of misery and darkness, where the shadow of death, and no order, but everlasting horror dwells.
