Book: John · ← John 15 · John 17 →
1
EN These things have I spoken to you things have I spoken to you that you may not be scandalized.
^1
2
EN They will put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour comes, that whosoever kills you will think that he does a service to God.
^2
3
LA Et hæc facient vobis, quia non noverunt Patrem, neque me.
EN And these things will they do to you; because they have not known the Father nor me.
^3
4
LA Sed hæc locutus sum vobis, ut cum venerit hora eorum, reminiscamini quia ego dixi vobis.
EN But these things I have told you, that when the hour shall come, you may remember that I told you of them.
^4
5
GR νῦν δὲ ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν πέμψαντά με, καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐρωτᾷ με: ποῦ ὑπάγεις;
EN But I told you not these things from the beginning, because I was with you. And now I go to him that sent me, and none of you asks me: Where are you going?
^5
6
LA sed quia hæc locutus sum vobis, tristitia implevit cor vestrum.
EN But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
^6
7
EN But I tell you the truth: it is expedient to you that I go. For if I go not, the Paraclete will not come to you: but if I go, I will send him to you.
^7
8
EN And when he has come, he will convince the world of sin and of justice and of judgment.
^8
[!note]- He will convince the world of sin, etc…
The Holy Ghost, by his coming brought over many thousands, first, to a sense of their sin in not believing in Christ. Secondly, to a conviction of the justice of Christ, now sitting at the right hand of his Father. And thirdly, to a right apprehension of the judgment prepared for them that choose to follow Satan, who is already judged and condemned.
9
LA De peccato quidem, quia non crediderunt in me.
EN Of sin: because they believed not in me.
^9
10
EN And of justice: because I go to the Father: and you shall see me no longer.
^10
11
EN And of judgment: because the prince of this world is already judged.
^11
12
EN I have yet many things to say to you: but you cannot bear them now.
^12
13
EN But when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will teach you all truth. For he shall not speak of himself: but what things soever he shall hear, he shall speak. And the things that are to come, he shall show you.
^13
[!note]- Will teach you all truth…
See the annotation on chap. 14. ver. 26.
14
EN He shall glorify me: because he shall receive of mine and shall show it to you.
^14
15
EN All things whatsoever the Father has are mine. Therefore I said that he shall receive of me and show it to you.
^15
16
LA Modicum, et jam non videbitis me; et iterum modicum, et videbitis me: quia vado ad Patrem.
EN A little while, and now you shall not see me: and again a little while, and you shall see me: because I go to the Father.
^16
17
GR εἶπαν οὖν ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ πρὸς ἀλλήλους: τί ἐστιν τοῦτο ὃ λέγει ἡμῖν: μικρὸν καὶ οὐ θεωρεῖτέ με, καὶ πάλιν μικρὸν καὶ ὄψεσθέ με; καί ὅτι ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν πατέρα;
EN Then some of his disciples said one to another: What is this that he says to us: A little while, and you shall not see me: and again a little while, and you shall see me, and, Because I go to the Father?
^17
18
EN They said therefore: What is this that he says, A little while? We know not what he speaks.
^18
19
GR ἔγνω Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἤθελον αὐτὸν ἐρωτᾶν, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς: περὶ τούτου ζητεῖτε μετ’ ἀλλήλων ὅτι εἶπον, μικρὸν καὶ οὐ θεωρεῖτέ με, καὶ πάλιν μικρὸν καὶ ὄψεσθέ με;
LA Cognovit autem Jesus, quia volebant eum interrogare, et dixit eis: De hoc quæritis inter vos quia dixi: Modicum, et non videbitis me; et iterum modicum, et videbitis me.
EN And Jesus knew that they had a mind to ask him. And he said to them: Of this do you inquire among yourselves, because I said: A little while, and you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me?
^19
20
EN Amen, amen, I say to you, that you shall lament and weep, but the world shall rejoice: and you shall be made sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
^20
21
EN A woman, when she is in labour, has sorrow, because her hour has come; but when she has brought forth the child, she remembers no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
^21
22
LA Et vos igitur nunc quidem tristitiam habetis, iterum autem videbo vos, et gaudebit cor vestrum: et gaudium vestrum nemo tollet a vobis.
EN So also you now indeed have sorrow: but I will see you again and your heart shall rejoice. And your joy no man shall take from you.
^22
23
LA Et in illo die me non rogabitis quidquam. Amen, amen dico vobis: si quid petieritis Patrem in nomine meo, dabit vobis.
EN And in that day you shall not ask me anything. Amen, amen, I say to you: if you ask the Father anything in my name, he will give it you.
^23
24
EN Hitherto, you have not asked anything in my name. Ask, and you shall receive; that your joy may be full.
^24
25
LA Hæc in proverbiis locutus sum vobis.
EN These things I have spoken to you in proverbs. The hour comes when I will no longer speak to you in proverbs, but will show you plainly of the Father.
^25
26
LA in illo die in nomine meo petetis: et non dico vobis quia ego rogabo Patrem de vobis:
EN In that day, you shall ask in my name: and I say not to you that I will ask the Father for you.
^26
27
LA ipse enim Pater amat vos, quia vos me amastis, et credidistis, quia ego a Deo exivi.
EN For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came out from God.
^27
28
EN I came forth from the Father and have come into the world: again I leave the world and I go to the Father.
^28
29
EN His disciples say to him: Behold, now you speak plainly and speak no proverb.
^29
30
EN Now we know that you know all things and you need not that any man should ask you. By this we believe that you came forth from God.
^30
31
GR ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς: ἄρτι πιστεύετε;
LA Respondit eis Jesus: Modo creditis?
EN Jesus answered them: Do you now believe?
^31
32
EN Behold, the hour comes, and it is now come, that you shall be scattered every man to his own and shall leave me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
^32
33
LA Hæc locutus sum vobis, ut in me pacem habeatis. In mundo pressuram habebitis: sed confidite, ego vici mundum.
EN These things I have spoken to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you shall have distress. But have confidence. I have overcome the world.
^33
