Book: Luke · ← Luke 9 · Luke 11 →
1
EN And after these things, the Lord appointed also other seventy-two. And he sent them two and two before his face into every city and place whither he himself was to come.
^1
2
LA Et dicebat illis: Messis quidem multa, operarii autem pauci. Rogate ergo dominum messis ut mittat operarios in messem suam.
EN And he said to them: The harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few. Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest that he send labourers into his harvest.
^2
3
LA Ite: ecce ego mitto vos sicut agnos inter lupos.
EN Go: Behold I send you as lambs among wolves.
^3
4
EN Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.
^4
5
LA In quamcumque domum intraveritis, primum dicite: Pax huic domui:
EN Into whatever house you enter, first say: Peace be to this house.
^5
6
EN And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon him: but if not, it shall return to you.
^6
7
EN And in the same house, remain, eating and drinking such things as they have: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Remove not from house to house.
^7
8
LA Et in quamcumque civitatem intraveritis, et susceperint vos, manducate quæ apponuntur vobis:
EN And into what city soever you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you.
^8
9
LA et curate infirmos, qui in illa sunt, et dicite illis: Appropinquavit in vos regnum Dei.
EN And heal the sick that are therein and say to them: The kingdom of God has come near unto you.
^9
10
EN But into whatsoever city you enter, and they receive you not, going forth into the streets thereof, say:
^10
11
EN Even the very dust of your city that cleaves to us, we wipe off against you. Yet know this, that the kingdom of God is at hand.
^11
12
LA Dico vobis, quia Sodomis in die illa remissius erit, quam illi civitati.
EN I say to you, it shall be more tolerable at that day for Sodom than for that city.
^12
13
LA Væ tibi Corozain! væ tibi Bethsaida! quia si in Tyro et Sidone factæ fuissent virtutes quæ factæ sunt in vobis, olim in cilicio et cinere sedentes pœniterent.
EN Woe to you, Corozain! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if in Tyre and Sidon had been wrought the mighty works that have been wrought in you, they would have done penance long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
^13
14
LA Verumtamen Tyro et Sidoni remissius erit in judicio, quam vobis.
EN But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.
^14
15
EN And you, Capharnaum, which are exalted unto heaven, you shall be thrust down to hell.
^15
16
LA Qui vos audit, me audit: et qui vos spernit, me spernit. Qui autem me spernit, spernit eum qui misit me.
EN He that hears you hears me: and he that despises you despises me: and he that despises me despises him that sent me.
^16
17
EN And the seventy-two returned with joy, saying: Lord, the devils also are subject to us in your name.
^17
18
EN And he said to them: I saw Satan like lightning falling from heaven.
^18
19
EN Behold, I have given you power to tread upon serpents and scorpions and upon all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall hurt you.
^19
20
EN But yet rejoice not in this, that spirits are subject unto you: but rejoice in this, that your names are written in heaven.
^20
21
EN In that same hour, he rejoiced in the Holy Ghost and said: I confess to you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to little ones. Yea, Father, for so it has seemed good in your sight.
^21
[!note]- He rejoiced in the Holy Ghost…
That is, according to his humanity he rejoiced in the Holy Ghost, and gave thanks to his eternal Father.
22
EN All things are delivered to me by my Father. And no one knows who the Son is, but the Father: and who the Father is, but the Son and to whom the Son will reveal him.
^22
23
LA Et conversus ad discipulos suos, dixit: Beati oculi qui vident quæ vos videtis.
EN And turning to his disciples, he said: Blessed are the eyes that see the things which you see.
^23
24
EN For I say to you that many prophets and kings have desired to see the things that you see and have not seen them; and to hear the things that you hear and have not heard them.
^24
25
GR Καὶ ἰδοὺ νομικός τις ἀνέστη ἐκπειράζων αὐτὸν, λέγων: διδάσκαλε, τί ποιήσας ζωὴν αἰώνιον κληρονομήσω;
LA Et ecce quidam legisperitus surrexit tentans illum, et dicens: Magister, quid faciendo vitam æternam possidebo?
EN And behold a certain lawyer stood up, tempting him and saying, Master, what must I do to possess eternal life?
^25
26
GR ὁ δὲ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν: ἐν τῷ νόμῳ τί γέγραπται; πῶς ἀναγινώσκεις;
LA At ille dixit ad eum: In lege quid scriptum est? quomodo legis?
EN But he said to him: What is written in the law? How do you read it?
^26
27
EN He answering, said: You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with all your strength and with all your mind: and your neighbour as yourself.
^27
28
EN And he said to him: You have answered right. This do: and you shall live.
^28
29
GR ὁ δὲ θέλων δικαιῶσαι ἑαυτὸν εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν: καὶ τίς ἐστίν μου πλησίον;
EN But he willing to justify himself, said to Jesus: And who is my neighbour?
^29
30
EN And Jesus answering, said: A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among robbers, who also stripped him and having wounded him went away, leaving him half dead.
^30
31
EN And it chanced, that a certain priest went down the same way: and seeing him, passed by.
^31
32
EN In like manner also a Levite, when he was near the place and saw him, passed by.
^32
33

EN But a certain Samaritan, being on his journey, came near him: and seeing him, was moved with compassion:
^33
34
LA Et appropians alligavit vulnera ejus, infundens oleum et vinum: et imponens illum in jumentum suum, duxit in stabulum, et curam ejus egit.
EN And going up to him, bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine: and setting him upon his own beast, brought him to an inn and took care of him.
^34
35
EN And the next day he took out two pence and gave to the host and said: Take care of him; and whatsoever you shall spend over and above, I, at my return, will repay you.
^35
36
GR τίς τούτων τῶν τριῶν πλησίον δοκεῖ σοι γεγονέναι τοῦ ἐμπεσόντος εἰς τοὺς λῃστάς;

EN Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbour to him that fell among the robbers?
^36
37

LA At ille dixit: Qui fecit misericordiam in illum. Et ait illi Jesus: Vade, et tu fac similiter.
EN But he said: He that showed mercy to him. And Jesus said to him: Go, and do in like manner.
^37
38

EN And she had a sister called Mary. who, sitting also at the Lord’s feet, heard his word.
^39
40
LA Martha autem satagebat circa frequens ministerium: quæ stetit, et ait: Domine, non est tibi curæ quod soror mea reliquit me solam ministrare? dic ergo illi ut me adjuvet.
EN But Martha was busy about much serving. Who stood and said: Lord, have you no care that my sister has left me alone to serve? Speak to her therefore, that she help me.
^40
41
LA Et respondens dixit illi Dominus: Martha, Martha, sollicita es, et turbaris erga plurima,

^41
42

EN But one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her.
^42
