1
LA In diebus autem illis venit Joannes Baptista prædicans in deserto Judææ,
EN And in those days comes John the Baptist preaching in the desert of Judea.
^1
2
EN And saying: Do penance: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
^2
3
EN For this is he that was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying: A voice of one crying in the desert, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.
^3
[!note]- Do penance…
Paenitentiam agite. Which word, according to the use of the scriptures and the holy fathers, does not only signify repentance and amendment of life, but also punishing past sins by fasting, and such like penitential exercises.
4
EN And the same John had his garment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins: and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
^4
5
LA Tunc exibat ad eum Jerosolyma, et omnis Judæa, et omnis regio circa Jordanem;
EN Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea, and all the country about Jordan:
^5
6
LA et baptizabantur ab eo in Jordane, confitentes peccata sua.
EN And were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
^6
7
GR ἰδὼν δὲ πολλοὺς τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ Σαδδουκαίων ἐρχομένους ἐπὶ τὸ βάπτισμα εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, τίς ὑπέδειξεν ὑμῖν φυγεῖν ἀπὸ τῆς μελλούσης ὀργῆς;
LA Videns autem multos pharisæorum, et sadducæorum, venientes ad baptismum suum, dixit eis: Progenies viperarum, quis demonstravit vobis fugere a ventura ira?
EN And seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them: You brood of vipers, who has showed you to flee from the wrath to come?
^7
8
LA Facite ergo fructum dignum pœnitentiæ.
EN Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of penance.
^8
9
EN And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father. For I tell you that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.
^9
10
EN For now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not yield good fruit, shall be cut down, and cast into the fire.
^10
11
LA Ego quidem baptizo vos in aqua in pœnitentiam: qui autem post me venturus est, fortior me est, cujus non sum dignus calceamenta portare: ipse vos baptizabit in Spiritu Sancto, et igni.
EN I indeed baptize you in water unto penance, but he that shall come after me, is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Ghost and fire.
^11
12
LA Cujus ventilabrum in manu sua: et permundabit aream suam: et congregabit triticum suum in horreum, paleas autem comburet igni inextinguibili.
EN Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor and gather his wheat into the barn; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.
^12
[!note]- Pharisees and Sadducees…
These were two sects among the Jews: of which the former were for the most part notorious hypocrites; the latter, a kind of freethinkers in matters of religion.
13
EN Then comes Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan, unto John, to be baptized by him.
^13
14
GR ὁ δὲ διεκώλυεν αὐτὸν λέγων: ἐγὼ χρείαν ἔχω ὑπὸ σοῦ βαπτισθῆναι, καὶ σὺ ἔρχῃ πρός με;
LA Joannes autem prohibebat eum, dicens: Ego a te debeo baptizari, et tu venis ad me?
EN But John stayed him, saying: I ought to be baptized by you, and you come to me?
^14
15
LA Respondens autem Jesus, dixit ei: Sine modo: sic enim decet nos implere omnem justitiam. Tunc dimisit eum.
EN And Jesus answering, said to him: Allow it to be so now. For so it becomes us to fulfil all justice. Then he allowed him.
^15
16
EN And Jesus being baptized, forthwith came out of the water: and lo, the heavens were opened to him: and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him.
^16
17
EN And behold a voice from heaven saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
