LA Domine, probasti me, et cognovisti me;
EN Lord, you have proved me, and known me:
^1
2
EN You have known my sitting down, and my rising up.
^2
3
EN You have understood my thoughts afar off: my path and my line you have searched out.
^3
4
EN And you have foreseen all my ways: for there is no speech in my tongue.
^4
5
Tu formasti me, et posuisti super me manum tuam.
EN Behold, O Lord, you have known all things, the last and those of old: you have formed me, and have laid your hand upon me.
^5
6
EN Your knowledge has become wonderful to me: it is high, and I cannot reach to it.
^6
7
EN Whither shall I go from your spirit? Or whither shall I flee from your face?
^7
8
LA Si ascendero in cælum, tu illic es; si descendero in infernum, ades.
EN If I ascend into heaven, you are there: if I descend into hell, you are present.
^8
9
LA Si sumpsero pennas meas diluculo, et habitavero in extremis maris,
EN If I take my wings early in the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea:
^9
10
LA etenim illuc manus tua deducet me, et tenebit me dextera tua.
EN Even there also shall your hand lead me: and your right hand shall hold me.
^10
11
LA Et dixi: Forsitan tenebræ conculcabunt me; et nox illuminatio mea in deliciis meis.
EN And I said: Perhaps darkness shall cover me: and night shall be my light in my pleasures.
^11
12
EN But darkness shall not be dark to you, and night shall be light all the day: the darkness thereof, and the light thereof are alike to you.
^12
13
EN For you have possessed my reins: you have protected me from my mother’s womb.
^13
14
LA Confitebor tibi, quia terribiliter magnificatus es; mirabilia opera tua, et anima mea cognoscit nimis.
EN I will praise you, for you are fearfully magnified: wonderful are your works, and my soul knows right well.
^14
15

LA Imperfectum meum viderunt oculi tui, et in libro tuo omnes scribentur. Dies formabuntur, et nemo in eis.
EN Your eyes did see my imperfect being, and in your book all shall be written: days shall be formed, and no one in them.
^16
17

LA Si occideris, Deus, peccatores, viri sanguinum, declinate a me:
EN If you will kill the wicked, O God: you men of blood, depart from me:
^19
20

EN Because you say in thought: They shall receive your cities in vain.
^20
[!note]- Because you say in thought, etc…
Depart from me, you wicked, who plot against the servants of God, and think to cast them out of the cities of their habitation; as if they have received them in vain, and to no purpose. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
21
