1
LA Ut quid, Deus, repulisti in finem, iratus est furor tuus super oves pascuæ tuæ?
EN O God, why have you cast us off unto the end: why is your wrath enkindled against the sheep of your pasture?
^1
2
Redemisti virgam hæreditatis tuæ, mons Sion, in quo habitasti in eo.
EN Remember your congregation, which you have possessed from the beginning. The sceptre of your inheritance which you have redeemed: mount Sion in which you have dwelt.
^2
3
LA Leva manus tuas in superbias eorum in finem: quanta malignatus est inimicus in sancto!
EN Lift up your hands against their pride unto the end; see what things the enemy has done wickedly in the sanctuary.
^3
4
LA Et gloriati sunt qui oderunt te in medio solemnitatis tuæ; posuerunt signa sua, signa:
EN And they that hate you have made their boasts, in the midst of your solemnity. They have set up their ensigns for signs,
^4
5
GR ὡς εἰς τὴν εἴσοδον ὑπεράνω
LA et non cognoverunt sicut in exitu super summum. Quasi in silva lignorum securibus
EN and they knew not both in the going out and on the highest top. As with axes in a wood of trees,
^5
6
LA exciderunt januas ejus in idipsum; in securi et ascia dejecerunt eam.
EN they have cut down at once the gates thereof, with axe and hatchet they have brought it down.
^6
7
LA Incenderunt igni sanctuarium tuum; in terra polluerunt tabernaculum nominis tui.
EN They have set fire to your sanctuary: they have defiled the dwelling place of your name on the earth.
^7
8
LA Dixerunt in corde suo cognatio eorum simul: Quiescere faciamus omnes dies festos Dei a terra.
EN They said in their heart, the whole kindred of them together: Let us abolish all the festival days of God from the land.
^8
9
EN Our signs we have not seen, there is now no prophet: and he will know us no more.
^9
10
LA Usquequo, Deus, improperabit inimicus? irritat adversarius nomen tuum in finem?
EN How long, O God, shall the enemy reproach: is the adversary to provoke your name for ever?
^10
11
EN Why do you turn away your hand: and your right hand out of the midst of your bosom for ever?
^11
12
LA Deus autem rex noster ante sæcula: operatus est salutem in medio terræ.
EN But God is our king before ages: he has wrought salvation in the midst of the earth.
^12
13
LA Tu confirmasti in virtute tua mare; contribulasti capita draconum in aquis.
EN You by your strength made the sea firm: you crushed the heads of the dragons in the waters.
^13
[!note]- The sea firm…
By making the waters of the Red Sea stand like firm walls, whilst Israel passed through: and destroying the Egyptians called here dragons from their cruelty, in the same waters, with their king: casting up their bodies on the shore to be stripped by the Ethiopians inhabiting in those days the coast of Arabia. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
14
LA Tu confregisti capita draconis; dedisti eum escam populis Æthiopum.
EN You have broken the heads of the dragon: you have given him to be meat for the people of the Ethiopians.
^14
15
EN You have broken up the fountains and the torrents: you have dried up the Ethan rivers.
^15
[!note]- Ethan rivers…
That is, rivers which run with strong streams. This was verified in Jordan (Joshua 3) and in Arnon (Numbers 21:14). Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
16
EN Yours is the day, and yours is the night: you have made the morning light and the sun.
^16
17
EN You have made all the borders of the earth: the summer and the spring were formed by you.
^17
18
EN Remember this, the enemy has reproached the Lord: and a foolish people has provoked your name.
^18
19
EN Deliver not up to beasts the souls that confess to you: and forget not to the end the souls of your poor.
^19
20
EN Have regard to your covenant: for they that are the obscure of the earth have been filled with dwellings of iniquity.
^20
[!note]- The obscure of the earth…
Mean and ignoble wretches have been filled, that is, enriched, with houses of iniquity, that is, with our estates and possessions, which they have unjustly acquired. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
21
EN Let not the humble be turned away with confusion: the poor and needy shall praise your name.
^21
22
LA Exsurge, Deus, judica causam tuam; memor esto improperiorum tuorum, eorum quæ ab insipiente sunt tota die.
EN Arise, O God, judge your own cause: remember your reproaches with which the foolish man has reproached you all the day.
^22
23
EN Forget not the voices of your enemies: the pride of them that hate you ascends continually.
^23
[!note]- Their ensigns, etc…
They have fixed their colours for signs and trophies, both on the gates, and on the highest top of the temple: and they knew not, that is, they regarded not the sanctity of the place. This psalm manifestly foretells the time of the Machabees, and the profanation of the temple by Antiochus. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
