Book: John · ← John 11 · John 13 →
1
LA Jesus ergo ante sex dies Paschæ venit Bethaniam, ubi Lazarus fuerat mortuus, quem suscitavit Jesus.
EN Jesus therefore, six days before the pasch, came to Bethania, where Lazarus had been dead, whom Jesus raised to life.
^1
2
EN And they made him a supper there: and Martha served. But Lazarus was one of them that were at table with him.
^2
3
EN Mary therefore took a pound of ointment of right spikenard, of great price, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
^3
4
EN Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, he that was about to betray him, said:
^4
5
GR διὰ τί τοῦτο τὸ μύρον οὐκ ἐπράθη τριακοσίων δηναρίων καὶ ἐδόθη πτωχοῖς;
EN Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence and given to the poor?
^5
6
EN Now he said this not because he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief and, having the purse, carried the things that were put therein.
^6
7
LA Dixit ergo Jesus: Sinite illam ut in diem sepulturæ meæ servet illud.
EN Jesus therefore said: Let her alone, that she may keep it against the day of my burial.
^7
8
EN For the poor you have always with you: but me you have not always.
^8
[!note]- Me you have not always…
Viz., in a visible manner, as when conversant here on earth; and as we have the poor, whom we may daily assist and relieve.
9
EN A great multitude therefore of the Jews knew that he was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
^9
10
EN But the chief priests thought to kill Lazarus also:
^10
11
LA quia multi propter illum abibant ex Judæis, et credebant in Jesum.
EN Because many of the Jews, by reason of him, went away and believed in Jesus.
^11
12
EN And on the next day, a great multitude that had come to the festival day, when they had heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
^12
13
EN took branches of palm trees and went forth to meet him and cried Hosanna. Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel.
^13
14
EN And Jesus found a young ass and sat upon it, as it is written:
^14
15
LA Noli timere, filia Sion: ecce rex tuus venit sedens super pullum asinæ.
EN Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold your king comes, sitting on an ass’ colt.
^15
16
EN These things his disciples did not know at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of him and that they had done these things to him.
^16
17
EN The multitude therefore gave testimony, which was with him, when he called Lazarus out of the grave and raised him from the dead.
^17
18
EN For which reason also the people came to meet him, because they heard that he had done this miracle.
^18
19
LA Pharisæi ergo dixerunt ad semetipsos: Videtis quia nihil proficimus? ecce mundus totus post eum abiit.
EN The Pharisees therefore said among themselves: Do you see that we prevail nothing? Behold, the whole world has gone after him.
^19
20
EN Now there were certain Gentiles among them, who came up to adore on the festival day.
^20
21
EN These therefore came to Philip, who was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying: Sir, we would see Jesus.
^21
22
LA Venit Philippus, et dicit Andreæ; Andreas rursum et Philippus dixerunt Jesu.
EN Philip comes and tells Andrew. Again Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
^22
23
EN But Jesus answered them, saying: The hour has come that the Son of man should be glorified.
^23
24
LA Amen, amen dico vobis, nisi granum frumenti cadens in terram, mortuum fuerit,
EN Amen, amen, I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falling into the ground die,
^24
25
But if it die it brings forth much fruit. He that loves his life shall lose it and he that hates his life in this world keeps it unto life eternal.
^25
26
Si quis mihi ministraverit, honorificabit eum Pater meus.
EN If any man minister to me, let him follow me: and where I am, there also shall my minister be. If any man minister to me, him will my Father honour.
^26
27
LA Nunc anima mea turbata est. Et quid dicam? Pater, salvifica me ex hac hora. Sed propterea veni in horam hanc:
EN Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour. But for this cause I came unto this hour.
^27
28
EN Father, glorify your name. A voice therefore came from heaven: I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.
^28
29
EN The multitude therefore that stood and heard said that it thundered. Others said: An angel spoke to him.
^29
30
LA Respondit Jesus, et dixit: Non propter me hæc vox venit, sed propter vos.
EN Jesus answered and said: This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.
^30
31
EN Now is the judgment of the world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
^31
32
EN And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to myself.
^32
33
LA (Hoc autem dicebat, significans qua morte esset moriturus.)
EN (Now this he said, signifying what death he should die.)
^33
34
GR ἀπεκρίθη οὖν αὐτῷ ὁ ὄχλος, ἡμεῖς ἠκούσαμεν ἐκ τοῦ νόμου ὅτι ὁ Χριστὸς μένει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, καὶ πῶς λέγεις σὺ ὅτι δεῖ ὑψωθῆναι τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου; τίς ἐστιν οὗτος ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου;
LA Respondit ei turba: Nos audivimus ex lege, quia Christus manet in æternum: et quomodo tu dicis: Oportet exaltari Filium hominis? quis est iste Filius hominis?
EN The multitude answered him: We have heard out of the law that Christ abides for ever. And how do you say: The Son of man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of man?
^34
35
EN Jesus therefore said to them: Yet a little while, the light is among you. Walk whilst you have the light, and the darkness overtake you not. And he that walks in darkness knows not whither be goes.
^35
36
LA Dum lucem habetis, credite in lucem, ut filii lucis sitis.
EN Whilst you have the light, believe in the light, that you may be the children of light. These things Jesus spoke: and he went away and hid himself from them.
^36
37
LA Cum autem tanta signa fecisset coram eis, non credebant in eum;
EN And whereas he had done so many miracles before them, they believed not in him:
^37
38
GR ἵνα ὁ λόγος Ἠσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου πληρωθῇ, ὃν εἶπεν: κύριε, τίς ἐπίστευσεν τῇ ἀκοῇ ἡμῶν; καὶ ὁ βραχίων κυρίου τίνι ἀπεκαλύφθη;
EN That the saying of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he said: Lord, who has believed our hearing? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
^38
39
EN Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again:
^39
40
EN He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart and be converted: and I should heal them.
^40
[!note]- They could not believe…
Because they would not, saith St. Augustine, Tract. 33, in Joan. See the annotation, Mark 4:12.
41
EN These things said Isaiah, when he saw his glory, and spoke of him.
^41
42
EN However, many of the chief men also believed in him: but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, that they might not be cast out of the synagogue.
^42
43
EN For they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.
^43
44
LA Jesus autem clamavit, et dixit: Qui credit in me, non credit in me, sed in eum qui misit me.
EN But Jesus cried and said: He that believes in me does not believe in me, but in him that sent me.
^44
45
LA Et qui videt me, videt eum qui misit me.
EN And he that sees me, sees him that sent me.
^45
46
EN I have come, a light into the world, that whosoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.
^46
47
EN And if any man hear my words and keep them not, I do not judge him for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
^47
48
Sermo quem locutus sum, ille judicabit eum in novissimo die.
EN He that despises me and receives not my words has one that judges him. The word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
^48
49
EN For I have not spoken of myself: but the Father who sent me, he gave me commandment what I should say and what I should speak.
^49
50
LA Et scio quia mandatum ejus vita æterna est: quæ ergo ego loquor, sicut dixit mihi Pater, sic loquor.
EN And I know that his commandment is life everlasting. The things therefore that I speak, even as the Father said unto me, so do I speak.
^50
