EN Now the feast of the pasch and of the Azymes was after two days: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might by some wile lay hold on him and kill him.
^1
[!note]- Azymes…
That is, the feast of the unleavened bread.
2
LA Dicebant autem: Non in die festo, ne forte tumultus fieret in populo.
EN But they said: Not on the festival day, lest there should be a tumult among the people.
^2
3
LA Et cum esset Bethaniæ in domo Simonis leprosi, et recumberet, venit mulier habens alabastrum unguenti nardi spicati pretiosi: et fracto alabastro, effudit super caput ejus.
EN And when he was in Bethania, in the house of Simon the leper, and was at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of precious spikenard. And breaking the alabaster box, she poured it out upon his head.
^3
4
GR ἦσαν δέ τινες ἀγανακτοῦντες πρὸς ἑαυτούς: εἰς τί ἡ ἀπώλεια αὕτη τοῦ μύρου γέγονεν;
EN Now there were some that had indignation within themselves and said: Why was this waste of the ointment made?
^4
5
Et fremebant in eam.
EN For this ointment might have been sold for more than three hundred pence and given to the poor. And they murmured against her.
^5
6
LA Jesus autem dixit: Sinite eam, quid illi molesti estis? Bonum opus operata est in me:
EN But Jesus said: Let her alone. Why do You molest her? She has wrought a good work upon me.
^6
7
EN For the poor you have always with you: and whensoever you will, you may do them good: but me you have not always.
^7
8
LA Quod habuit hæc, fecit: prævenit ungere corpus meum in sepulturam.
EN She has done what she could: she has come beforehand to anoint my body for the burial.
^8
9
LA Amen dico vobis: Ubicumque prædicatum fuerit Evangelium istud in universo mundo, et quod fecit hæc, narrabitur in memoriam ejus.
EN Amen, I say to you, wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, that also which she has done shall be told for a memorial of her.
^9
10
EN And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests, to betray him to them.
^10
11

^11
12
GR Καὶ τῇ πρώτῃ ἡμέρᾳ τῶν ἀζύμων, ὅτε τὸ πάσχα ἔθυον, λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ: ποῦ θέλεις ἀπελθόντες ἑτοιμάσωμεν ἵνα φάγῃς τὸ πάσχα;
LA Et primo die azymorum quando Pascha immolabant, dicunt ei discipuli: Quo vis eamus, et paremus tibi ut manduces Pascha?
EN Now on the first day of the unleavened bread, when they sacrificed the pasch, the disciples say to him: Whither will you that we go and prepare for you to eat the pasch?
^12
13
LA Et mittit duos ex discipulis suis, et dicit eis: Ite in civitatem, et occurret vobis homo lagenam aquæ bajulans: sequimini eum,
EN And he sends two of his disciples and says to them: Go into the city; and there shall meet you a man carrying a pitcher of water. Follow him.
^13
14
GR καὶ ὅπου ἐὰν εἰσέλθῃ εἴπατε τῷ οἰκοδεσπότῃ ὅτι ὁ διδάσκαλος λέγει: ποῦ ἐστιν τὸ κατάλυμά μου, ὅπου τὸ πάσχα μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν μου φάγω;
EN And wherever he shall go in, say to the master of the house, The master says, Where is my refectory, where I may eat the pasch with my disciples?
^14
15
EN And he will show you a large dining room furnished. And there prepare for us.
^15
16
EN And his disciples went their way and came into the city. And they found as he had told them: and they prepared the pasch.

LA At illi cœperunt contristari, et dicere ei singulatim: Numquid ego?
EN But they began to be sorrowful and to say to him, one by one: Is it I?
^19
20

^20
21
EN And the Son of man indeed goes, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man shall be betrayed. It were better for him, if that man had not been born.
^21
22

LA Et ait illi Jesus: Amen dico tibi, quia tu hodie in nocte hac, priusquam gallus vocem bis dederit, ter me es negaturus.
EN And Jesus said to him: Amen I say to you, today, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, you shall deny me thrice.
^30
[!note]- Crow twice…
The cocks crow at two different times of the night; viz., about midnight for the first time; and then about the time commonly called the cock crowing; and this was the cock crowing our Saviour spoke of; and therefore the other Evangelists take no notice of the first crowing.
