Matthew 18 #catechesis/bible/matthew
[!abstract] Christ teaches humility, to beware of scandal, and to flee the occasions of sin: to denounce to the Church incorrigible sinners, and to look upon such as refuse to hear the Church as heathens. He promises to his disciples the power of binding and loosing: and that he will be in the midst of their assemblies. No forgiveness for them that will not forgive.

1
GR Ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ὥρᾳ προσῆλθον οἱ μαθηταὶ τῷ Ἰησοῦ λέγοντες: τίς ἄρα μείζων ἐστὶν ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν;
LA In illa hora accesserunt discipuli ad Jesum, dicentes: Quis, putas, major est in regno cælorum?
EN At that hour the disciples came to Jesus, saying: Who, do you think, is the greater in the kingdom of heaven?
^1
2
LA Et advocans Jesus parvulum, statuit eum in medio eorum,
EN And Jesus, calling unto him a little child, set him in the midst of them.
^2
3
EN And said: amen I say to you, unless you be converted, and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
^3
4
EN Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, he is the greater in the kingdom of heaven.
^4
5
LA Et qui susceperit unum parvulum talem in nomine meo, me suscipit:
EN And he that shall receive one such little child in my name, receives me.
^5
6
EN But he that shall scandalize one of these little ones that believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be drowned in the depth of the sea.
^6
7
EN Woe to the world because of scandals. For it must needs be that scandals come: but nevertheless woe to that man by whom the scandal comes.
^7
8
EN And if your hand, or your foot, scandalize you, cut it off, and cast it from you. It is better for you to go into life maimed or lame, than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into everlasting fire.
^8
9
EN And if your eye scandalize you, pluck it out, and cast it from you. It is better for you having one eye to enter into life, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.
^9
10
LA Videte ne contemnatis unum ex his pusillis: dico enim vobis, quia angeli eorum in cælis semper vident faciem Patris mei, qui in cælis est.
EN See that you despise not one of these little ones: for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.
^10
11
EN For the Son of man has come to save that which was lost.
^11
12
GR Τί ὑμῖν δοκεῖ; ἐὰν γένηταί τινι ἀνθρώπῳ ἑκατὸν πρόβατα καὶ πλανηθῇ ἓν ἐξ αὐτῶν, οὐχὶ ἀφήσει τὰ ἐνενήκοντα ἐννέα ἐπὶ τὰ ὄρη καὶ πορευθεὶς ζητεῖ τὸ πλανώμενον;
EN What think you? If a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them should go astray: does he not leave the ninety-nine in the mountains, and goes to seek that which has gone astray?
^12
13
EN And if it so be that he find it: Amen I say to you, he rejoices more for that, than for the ninety-nine that went not astray.
^13
14
EN Even so it is not the will of your Father, who is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.
^14
[!note]- Shall scandalize…
That is, shall put a stumbling block in their way, and cause them to fall into sin.
[!note]- It must needs be, etc…
Viz., considering the wickedness and corruption of the world.
[!note]- Scandalize thee…
That is, cause thee to offend.
15
EN But if your brother shall offend against you, go, and rebuke him between you and him alone. If he shall hear you, you shall gain your brother.
^15
16
EN And if he will not hear you, take with you one or two more: that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may stand.
^16
17
EN And if he will not hear them: tell the church. And if he will not hear the church, let him be to you as the heathen and publican.
^17
18
LA Amen dico vobis, quæcumque alligaveritis super terram, erunt ligata et in cælo: et quæcumque solveritis super terram, erunt soluta et in cælo.
EN Amen I say to you, whatsoever you shall bind upon earth, shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever you shall loose upon earth, shall be loosed also in heaven.
^18
19
EN Again I say to you, that if two of you shall consent upon earth, concerning anything whatsoever they shall ask, it shall be done to them by my Father who is in heaven.
^19
20
EN For where there are two or three gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
^20
[!note]- There am I in the midst of them…
This is understood of such assemblies only as are gathered in the name and authority of Christ; and in unity of the church of Christ. St. Cyprian, De Unitate Ecclesiae.
21
GR Τότε προσελθὼν ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν [αὐτῷ]: κύριε, ποσάκις ἁμαρτήσει εἰς ἐμὲ ὁ ἀδελφός μου καὶ ἀφήσω αὐτῷ; ἕως ἑπτάκις;
LA Tunc accedens Petrus ad eum, dixit: Domine, quoties peccabit in me frater meus, et dimittam ei? usque septies?
EN Then came Peter unto him and said: Lord, how often shall my brother offend against me, and I forgive him? Till seven times?
^21
22
LA Dicit illi Jesus: Non dico tibi usque septies: sed usque septuagies septies.
EN Jesus said to him: I say not to you, till seven times; but till seventy times seven times.
^22
23
EN Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened to a king, who would take an account of his servants.
^23
24
EN And when he had begun to take the account, one was brought to him, that owed him ten thousand talents.
^24
[!note]- Talents…
A talent was seven hundred and fifty ounces of silver, which at the rate of five shillings to the ounce is a hundred and eighty-seven pounds ten shillings sterling.
25
EN And as he had not wherewith to pay it, his lord commanded that he should be sold, and his wife and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.
^25
26
LA Procidens autem servus ille, orabat eum, dicens: Patientiam habe in me, et omnia reddam tibi.
EN But that servant falling down, besought him, saying: Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.
^26
27
EN And the lord of that servant being moved with pity, let him go and forgave him the debt.
^27
28
EN But when that servant had gone out, he found one of his fellow-servants that owed him an hundred pence: and laying hold of him, he throttled him, saying: Pay what you owe.
^28
[!note]- Pence…
The Roman penny was the eighth part of an ounce, that is, about sevenpence half-penny English.
29
LA Et procidens conservus ejus, rogabat eum, dicens: Patientiam habe in me, et omnia reddam tibi.
EN And his fellow-servant falling down, besought him, saying: Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.
^29
30
EN And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he paid the debt.
^30
31
EN Now his fellow servants seeing what was done, were very much grieved, and they came, and told their lord all that was done.
^31
32
LA Tunc vocavit illum dominus suus: et ait illi: Serve nequam, omne debitum dimisi tibi quoniam rogasti me:
EN Then his lord called him: and said to him: You wicked servant, I forgave you all the debt, because you besought me:
^32
33
GR οὐκ ἔδει καὶ σὲ ἐλεῆσαι τὸν σύνδουλόν σου, ὡς κἀγὼ σὲ ἠλέησα;
EN Should you not then have had compassion also on your fellow servant, even as I had compassion on you?
^33
34
LA Et iratus dominus ejus tradidit eum tortoribus, quoadusque redderet universum debitum.
EN And his lord being angry, delivered him to the torturers until he paid all the debt.
^34
35
EN So also shall my heavenly Father do to you, if you forgive not every one his brother from your hearts.
^35
