Matthew 19 #catechesis/bible/matthew
[!abstract] Christ declares matrimony to be indissoluble: he recommends the making one’s self an eunuch for the kingdom of heaven; and parting with all things for him. He shows the danger of riches, and the reward of leaving all to follow him.

EN And it came to pass when Jesus had ended these words, he departed from Galilee and came into the coasts of Judea, beyond Jordan.
^1
2
EN And great multitudes followed him: and he healed them there.
^2
3
GR καὶ προσῆλθον αὐτῷ Φαρισαῖοι πειράζοντες αὐτὸν καὶ λέγοντες εἰ: ἔξεστιν ἀπολῦσαι τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ κατὰ πᾶσαν αἰτίαν;
EN And there came to him the Pharisees tempting him, saying: Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
^3
4
GR ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν: οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε ὅτι ὁ κτίσας ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ ἐποίησεν αὐτούς;
EN Who answering, said to them: Have you not read, that he who made man from the beginning, made them male and female? And he said:
^4
5
EN For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they two shall be in one flesh.
^5
6
EN Therefore now they are not two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder.
^6
7
GR λέγουσιν αὐτῷ: τί οὖν Μωϋσῆς ἐνετείλατο δοῦναι βιβλίον ἀποστασίου καὶ ἀπολῦσαι;
EN They say to him: Why then did Moses command to give a bill of divorce, and to put away?
^7
8
EN He says to them: Because Moses by reason of the hardness of your heart permitted you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
^8
9
EN And I say to you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, commits adultery: and he that shall marry her that is put away, commits adultery.
^9
10
EN His disciples say unto him: If the case of a man with his wife be so, it is not expedient to marry.
^10
11
EN Who said to them: All men take not this word, but they to whom it is given.
^11
12
EN For there are eunuchs, who were born so from their mothers womb: and there are eunuchs, who were made so by men: and there are eunuchs, who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven. He that can take, let him take it.
^12
[!note]- Except it be, etc…
In the case of fornication, that is, of adultery, the wife may be put away: but even then the husband cannot marry another as long as the wife is living.
[!note]- All men take not this word…
That is, all receive not the gift of living singly and chastely, unless they pray for the grace of God to enable them to live so, and for some it may be necessary to that end to fast as well as pray: and to those it is given from above.
[!note]- There are eunuchs, who have made themselves eunuchs, for the kingdom of heaven…
This text is not to be taken in the literal sense; but means, that there are such, who have taken a firm and commendable resolution of leading a single and chaste life, in order to serve God in a more perfect state than those who marry: as St. Paul clearly shows. 1 Corinthians 7:37-38.
13
EN Then were little children presented to him, that he should impose hands upon them and pray. And the disciples rebuked them.
^13
14
EN But Jesus said to them: Suffer the little children, and forbid them not to come to me: for the kingdom of heaven is for such.
^14
15
LA Et cum imposuisset eis manus, abiit inde.
EN And when he had imposed hands upon them, he departed from thence.
^15
16
GR Καὶ ἰδοὺ εἷς προσελθὼν αὐτῷ εἶπεν: διδάσκαλε, τί ἀγαθὸν ποιήσω ἵνα σχῶ ζωὴν αἰώνιον;
LA Et ecce unus accedens, ait illi: Magister bone, quid boni faciam ut habeam vitam æternam?
EN And behold one came and said to him: Good master, what good shall I do that I may have life everlasting?
^16
17
EN Who said to him: Why do you ask me concerning good? One is good, God. But if you will enter into life, keep the commandments.
^17
18
LA Dicit illi: Quæ? Jesus autem dixit: Non homicidium facies; non adulterabis; non facies furtum; non falsum testimonium dices;
EN He said to him: Which? And Jesus said: You shall do no murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness.
^18
19
EN Honour your father and your mother: and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
^19
20
GR λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ νεανίσκος: ταῦτα πάντα ἐφύλαξα: τί ἔτι ὑστερῶ;

EN The young man said to him: All these have I kept from my youth, what is yet wanting to me?
^20
21
LA Ait illi Jesus: Si vis perfectus esse, vade, vende quæ habes, et da pauperibus, et habebis thesaurum in cælo: et veni, sequere me.
EN Jesus said to him: If you will be perfect, go sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
^21
22
EN And when the young man had heard this word, he went away sad: for he had great possessions.
^22
23
LA Jesus autem dixit discipulis suis: Amen dico vobis, quia dives difficile intrabit in regnum cælorum.
EN Then Jesus said to his disciples: Amen, I say to you, that a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.
^23
24
EN And again I say to you: It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven.
^24
25
GR ἀκούσαντες δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἐξεπλήσσοντο σφόδρα λέγοντες: τίς ἄρα δύναται σωθῆναι;
LA Auditis autem his, discipuli mirabantur valde, dicentes: Quis ergo poterit salvus esse?
EN And when they had heard this, the disciples wondered much, saying: Who then can be saved?
^25
26
EN And Jesus beholding, said to them: With men this is impossible: but with God all things are possible.
^26
27
GR Τότε ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ: ἰδοὺ ἡμεῖς ἀφήκαμεν πάντα καὶ ἠκολουθήσαμέν σοι: τί ἄρα ἔσται ἡμῖν;
LA Tunc respondens Petrus, dixit ei: Ecce nos reliquimus omnia, et secuti sumus te: quid ergo erit nobis?
EN Then Peter answering, said to him: Behold we have left all things, and have followed you: what therefore shall we have?
^27
28
LA Jesus autem dixit illis: Amen dico vobis, quod vos, qui secuti estis me, in regeneratione cum sederit Filius hominis in sede majestatis suæ, sedebitis et vos super sedes duodecim, judicantes duodecim tribus Israël.
EN And Jesus said to them: Amen I say to you, that you who have followed me, in the regeneration, when the Son of man shall sit on the seat of his majesty, you also shall sit on twelve seats judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
